How to Transfer ChatGPT Memory to Claude
Move Your ChatGPT Memory to Claude in 5 Minutes
Disclosure: Membase is our product. You don't need it to transfer your memory: Claude's built-in import is free and covers most people. We cover that first. Steps were checked in November 2026.
Quick answer
To transfer your ChatGPT memory to Claude:
- In Claude, go to Settings > Your Claude and select Start import. Claude shows a prompt.
- Paste that prompt into ChatGPT. It writes out what it remembers about you.
- Remove anything you don't want to move, then copy the result.
- Paste it into Claude's import box and select Add to memory.
It takes about five minutes and works on every Claude plan. It's a one-time copy: anything you tell ChatGPT afterwards won't reach Claude.

What you can transfer from ChatGPT to Claude
ChatGPT remembers you in two ways:
- Saved memories: facts you told it, or that it chose, to keep.
- What it learns from your past chats: patterns and details it picks up over time.
Claude's import moves what ChatGPT can describe about you when you ask: your role, preferences, ongoing projects and how you like answers written. It doesn't move your conversations themselves.
Step-by-step: Claude's memory import
Claude's import is free on every Claude plan, on the web and in Claude Desktop.
Step 1: Start the import in Claude. Open Claude and go to Settings > Your Claude. Select Start import. Claude shows a prompt written for your old assistant. Copy it.
Step 2: Ask ChatGPT what it remembers. Open a new chat in ChatGPT and paste Claude's prompt. ChatGPT replies with one block describing what it knows about you.
Step 3: Clean it up. Read the answer before you move it. Delete anything that is:
- Out of date (an old job, a finished project)
- Wrong
- Private, or not something you want Claude to know
If a lot is wrong, fix it in ChatGPT first (Settings > Personalization > Memory) and run the prompt again.
Step 4: Paste it into Claude. Back in Claude, paste the cleaned-up text into the import box and select Add to memory.
Step 5: Check what Claude kept. Select See what Claude learned about you. Claude focuses its memory on work, so some personal details may not be kept. Anthropic labels memory import as experimental.
What doesn't transfer
| Moves with Claude's import | Doesn't move |
|---|---|
| What ChatGPT writes out about you from Claude's prompt | Your chat history |
| Preferences, role, projects, writing style | Files you uploaded |
| Projects and custom GPTs | |
| Anything you tell ChatGPT after the import |
What about ChatGPT's data export? Settings > Data controls > Export data emails you your conversations. It's a useful backup, but it doesn't include the memories ChatGPT built about you, so it can't replace the import.
Moving the other way? Claude's import only works into Claude. To bring Claude's memory into ChatGPT, copy what you need by hand, or keep both assistants on a shared memory (below).
Before you import: 4 tips
- Start with a fresh ChatGPT chat so the answer isn't shaped by the conversation you're in.
- Ask ChatGPT to add anything it missed: "Also include my current projects and how I like answers formatted."
- Keep a copy of the text in a note. If the import misses something, you can add it later.
- Don't paste passwords, keys or anything sensitive. Memory is not a vault.
After the move: why Claude's memory goes out of date
The import is a snapshot. If you keep using ChatGPT, everything you tell it from now on stays in ChatGPT. A month later, the two assistants know different things about you.
If you've switched to Claude for good, that's fine. If you still use ChatGPT, or also use Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek or Kimi, you'll be repeating the transfer.
Keep both assistants on one memory. Instead of copying memory between assistants, keep it in one place that every assistant can use. That's what Membase does:
- The Membase Chrome extension saves your conversations in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek and Kimi into one memory, and lets you send the relevant part into whichever chat you're in.
- Claude and ChatGPT can also search that memory directly once you connect Membase as a connector.
| Claude's import | Copy and paste | Membase | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Effort | 5 minutes, once | Every time | One install |
| Stays up to date | No | No | Yes |
| Works with Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Kimi | No | Manually | Yes |
| Cost | Free | Free | Free in beta |
The Chrome Web Store may still list the extension under its former name, Unibase Memory.

Does Claude have memory like ChatGPT?
Yes, but it works differently, which is why a transfer doesn't make the two identical.
| ChatGPT | Claude | |
|---|---|---|
| What it keeps | Saved memories plus a summary it updates itself | Memory focused on your work |
| Past chats | Can draw on your chat history | Can search past chats on paid plans |
| Reads the other's memory | No | No |
After the import, each keeps learning on its own.
Transferring from Gemini or Copilot
Claude's import works with other assistants too. Paste Claude's prompt into Gemini or Microsoft Copilot instead of ChatGPT and follow the same steps.
