ChatGPT Memory: How It Works and How to Manage It
Saved Memories, Chat History, “Memory Full” and How to Clear It
Disclosure: Membase is our product. ChatGPT’s built-in memory works well, and you don’t need anything else to use it. We cover it first, then where a shared memory helps. Facts were checked against OpenAI’s Help Center in November 2026.
Quick answer
Yes, ChatGPT has memory. It remembers your preferences and details from your chats so you don’t repeat yourself.
- Where to find it: Settings > Personalization > Memory
- What it draws on: your past chats, saved memories and custom instructions, and on some plans your saved files and connected apps
- How to clear it: delete items from your memory settings, and delete the chats where you shared them
- “Memory full”? Delete old saved memories to make room. Chat history has no separate storage limit.
ChatGPT’s memory stays inside ChatGPT. Claude, Gemini and other assistants don’t see it. To keep one memory across all of them, add a shared memory such as the Membase Chrome extension.

How ChatGPT memory works
When Memory is on, ChatGPT can use relevant information from several sources, depending on your plan and region:
- Your past chats
- Saved memories
- Custom instructions
- Saved files in Library or Space
- Connected apps, such as Gmail
It doesn’t keep every detail of every chat. It picks what’s relevant for each answer, and what it remembers changes as your context changes.
There are two versions:
| Improved memory | Saved memories (legacy) | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Keeps a broader summary of you up to date from your chats | A list of individual facts |
| How you see it | A memory summary you can correct | Each saved memory, one by one |
Where both are offered, switch under Settings > Personalization > Memory: select Saved memories for the legacy version, or Try improved memory to go back.
ChatGPT memory settings
Go to Settings > Personalization > Memory. Depending on your account, you’ll see some of these:
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Memory | Turns memory on or off. Turning it off doesn’t delete your chats |
| Reference saved memories | Lets ChatGPT use your saved memories. Turning it off also turns off Reference chat history |
| Reference chat history | Lets ChatGPT use your past chats. Turning it off schedules what it learned from them for deletion within 30 days; the chats stay |
| Memory summary | A high-level view of what ChatGPT may use about you |
| Manage / Saved memories | The list of individual saved memories |
See what ChatGPT remembers about you
- Memory summary: open it in memory settings. Correct anything by typing a correction, or highlight text and correct it.
- Ask: “What do you remember about me?”
- Sources: when an answer uses your personal context, Sources may appear under it, showing the past chat, saved memory or file it came from. You can correct or delete from there.
The summary doesn’t show everything ChatGPT can draw on.
ChatGPT memory full: what to do
“Memory full” refers to saved memories, the list of individual facts. When it fills up, ChatGPT stops adding new ones until you make room. Your chats are not deleted, and it doesn’t affect chat history, which has no separate storage limit. On some plans, saved memories are prioritized automatically.
To make room:
- Open Settings > Personalization > Memory and select Manage.
- Delete memories that are out of date, duplicated or no longer useful.
- Combine related ones: ask ChatGPT to replace several memories with one short one.
- Move standing instructions (“always answer in bullet points”) into custom instructions.
- Use a temporary chat for one-off questions, so nothing new is saved.
How to clear ChatGPT memory
Information can live in more than one place, so clearing it fully takes a few steps.
| To remove it from | Do this |
|---|---|
| The memory summary | Correct it, or select Don’t mention this again. To wipe it, use Delete and turn off memory in the ••• menu |
| Saved memories | Delete it in Manage, or ask ChatGPT to forget it |
| Your chats | Delete the chat where you shared it, including archived chats |
| Files | Delete it from Library or Space |
| Connected apps | Disconnect the app |
Good to know:
- Deleting a chat doesn’t delete a saved memory created from it. Delete both.
- Deleting a saved memory doesn’t remove it from past chats.
- “Don’t mention this again” stops ChatGPT bringing it up, but doesn’t delete the source.
- OpenAI may keep logs of deleted saved memories for up to 30 days.
Temporary chat
A temporary chat doesn’t create or update memories. Before you start one, you can choose Unpersonalized so it doesn’t use your existing memories or custom instructions either. You can’t change this after the chat starts.
If you save a temporary chat, it becomes a regular chat and follows your normal memory settings.
Where ChatGPT memory stops
ChatGPT’s memory is good at one job: remembering you inside ChatGPT. Outside that, it doesn’t reach:
- Other AI assistants. Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek and Kimi keep their own memory. What you tell ChatGPT stays in ChatGPT, and the reverse.
- A move to another assistant. Claude can import a summary of your ChatGPT memory once, but it doesn’t stay in sync. See How to Transfer ChatGPT Memory to Claude.
- Your data export. ChatGPT’s data export includes your conversations, not the memories it built about you.
- Unlimited saved memories. The saved-memories list can fill up and needs cleaning now and then.
If you only use ChatGPT, none of this matters much. If you switch between assistants, you end up explaining yourself again.
ChatGPT memory vs Claude memory
| ChatGPT | Claude | |
|---|---|---|
| What it saves | A memory summary or saved memories, plus what it learns from past chats | Topics about you, saved as you chat, focused on work |
| Where to manage it | Settings > Personalization > Memory | Settings > Your Claude |
| Uses past chats | Yes, with Reference chat history | Searches past chats on paid plans |
| Skip memory for one chat | Temporary chat | Incognito chat |
| Reads the other’s memory | No | No |

Share one memory across ChatGPT, Claude and other AI
You don’t have to replace ChatGPT’s memory. Keep it on, and add one memory that every assistant can use.
The Membase Chrome extension saves your conversations in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek and Kimi into one memory, and brings the relevant parts into whichever chat you’re in.
- Add the Membase Chrome extension (the Chrome Web Store may still list it as Unibase Memory).
- Sign in, or create a free account at app.membase.com.
- Chat as usual. Your conversations save to one memory, and what you told ChatGPT yesterday is there when you open Claude today.
It also takes pressure off ChatGPT’s own memory: your full conversations are kept in Membase, so you don’t have to cram everything into saved memories.
| ChatGPT memory | Membase | |
|---|---|---|
| Works in | ChatGPT | ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Kimi |
| Saves | A summary or list of facts about you | Your conversations, organized into Memories you choose |
| You control | Summary, saved memories, chat history, temporary chat | Which Memories each assistant can read; review, edit or delete anything |
| Cost | Included with ChatGPT | Free in beta |
Stop starting over every time you switch AI
