Disclosure: Membase is our product. You don’t need it to export your chats: ChatGPT’s built-in export is free, and we cover it first. Steps were checked against OpenAI’s Help Center in November 2026.

Quick answer

To export all your ChatGPT conversations:

  1. In ChatGPT on the web, open your profile menu and select Settings.
  2. Select Data controls.
  3. Under Export data, select Export, then Confirm export.
  4. Wait for an email or text with a download link. It can take up to 7 days, and the link expires 24 hours after it arrives.
  5. Select Download data export while signed in to the same account. You get a .zip file with your chat history.

To save one conversation, copy it, print it to PDF, or share a link. To keep every chat saved as you go, without exporting again, use a tool such as the Membase Chrome extension.

Export your full ChatGPT chat history

ChatGPT’s export is available on the Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans, and on eligible ChatGPT Edu workspaces. It isn’t available on Business, Enterprise or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces; ask your workspace owner instead.

On the web:

  1. Sign in to ChatGPT.
  2. Open your profile menu and select Settings.
  3. Select Data controls.
  4. Under Export data, select Export.
  5. On the confirmation screen, select Confirm export.

If you can’t sign in: request your data through OpenAI’s Privacy Portal instead. Select Make a Privacy Request, then I have a consumer ChatGPT account, then Download my data.

On iPhone and Android

iPhone or iPad:

  1. Open the ChatGPT app and go to your account settings.
  2. Select Data controls, then Export data.
  3. Select Confirm export.

Android:

  1. Open the ChatGPT app and open Settings from your profile menu.
  2. Select Data controls, then Export Data.
  3. Review the confirmation and select Export Data.

If the app shows Open ChatGPT on web instead, sign in on the web with the same account and use the web steps.

What’s in the export

ChatGPT sends the download link by email, or by text if your account uses only a phone number.

  • The download is a .zip file with your chat history and other account data.
  • Your conversations are usually in a readable web page and a conversations.json file. Large exports may be split into several files.
  • Download it while signed in to the account that asked for it. The link expires after 24 hours.
  • Open the .zip and check it has the chats you need. Chats you already deleted can’t be recovered.

Keep the file somewhere safe. It can contain personal information.

Save a single ChatGPT conversation

The full export is all-or-nothing. For one chat, these are quicker:

Print to PDFA clean, fixed copyOpen the chat, press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on Mac), and choose Save as PDF

Code blocks and tables may need tidying after a copy and paste.

ChatGPT export not working?

ProblemWhat to do
The email hasn’t arrivedExports can take up to 7 days. Check spam and promotions, or your text messages if you signed up with a phone number. After 7 days, contact OpenAI Support
“Export already requested”Wait for the current export to finish before asking again
The link expired or won’t openSign in to the same account and request a new export. If it won’t open on your phone, try a computer
No Export optionYou may be on a Business, Enterprise or Healthcare workspace, or an Edu workspace without access. Ask your workspace owner
You can’t sign inUse OpenAI’s Privacy Portal instead

Moving to a work workspace? If you’re merging your personal account into a Business, Enterprise, Edu or Healthcare workspace, download and check your export first. Once the personal workspace is removed, you may not be able to request another one.

What the export doesn’t include

  • ChatGPT’s memory of you. The export has your conversations, not the memory ChatGPT built about you. See ChatGPT Memory: How It Works and How to Manage It.
  • Deleted chats. Anything you deleted before exporting is gone.
  • A way to import it back into ChatGPT. ChatGPT has no import button for an export file.
  • Future chats. It’s a snapshot. Anything you chat about after you export isn’t in the file, so you’d have to export again.

Where you can use a ChatGPT export

Save every ChatGPT chat automatically

Exporting works once. If you want every conversation saved as you go, and searchable from other assistants too, use a shared memory instead.

The Membase Chrome extension saves your ChatGPT conversations into one memory automatically, including the chats you already have. It does the same for Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek and Kimi.

  1. Add the Membase Chrome extension (the Chrome Web Store may still list it as Unibase Memory).
  2. Sign in, or create a free account at app.membase.com.
  3. Open ChatGPT. Your conversations save to your memory with nothing to export.

Then open Claude or Gemini, and the relevant parts of your ChatGPT chats come with you.
